Winter Energy-Saving Hacks

With the energy price cap set to rise and winter on the horizon, it’s a given that our home energy bills will increase and hit us in the pocket.

As we love to save money at Secure For Life, we have put together 10 energy-saving tips to help you keep a little extra in the bank over the winter period.

So take a look at our top tips on how to keep warm for less!

1. One Degree
Turning down your thermostat by as little as one degree can save you 10% on your heating bill and you’ll probably not even notice the difference!

2. Match it
When cooking on the hob make sure to match the saucepan size to the hob ring. Otherwise, you’re paying to heat thin air.

3. Keep it Open
On the topic of cooking, once you have finished cooking a meal in the oven, leave the door open to let the warm air circulate through your house.

4. Zone In
Use zoned heating. Make sure to close off rooms and vents in rooms that are not in use. Turn off any radiators in those rooms too.

5. Standby
Switch off electrical appliances at the plug, don’t leave them on standby. Turning off an Xbox from standby can save you around £10 a year. It all adds up.

6. Shorter
Try taking shorter, lukewarm showers. You’ll avoid getting dry skin, and save money on water heating. Healthy and economical!

7. Replace
Replace your light bulbs with energy-efficient bulbs or LEDs. They are much kinder to your wallet and the environment. Turn off lights as you leave rooms too!

8. 30 Degrees
Put your washing on a 30-degree cycle. The lower temperature will use less energy.

9. Sausages
Exclude draughts with heavy curtains and sausage-shaped draught excluders at the bottom of doors. Keep that heat in!

10. The Simplest!
The easiest way of saving on your energy bill is to wear extra layers of clothing, instead of turning up the heating.
